My nickname from a golfing buddy is "sandy"! To help you get the most out of your game you have to get out of bunkers. Greenside bunker play is today's topic, bunker avoidance is a different one all together! Regardless of your skill level or strength from the sand, it is important to keep in mind that like in business, it is critical to have a goal, a plan and then execute it. Click the arrows to see more about your bunker solutions!
Your Bunker Goal
Just Get the Damn Thing Out!
Get It Out Somewhere On The Green
Let's Get This Up and Down
Your Bunker Plan
Forget the Analysis - Glide the bottom/bounce of your wedge through the sand like the hull of a boat through the water.
Some Analysis Required - Your bunker plan needs target awareness. Not of the hole/flagstick, but on the target area where your ball needs to land to give you a chance at holing the putt. Think of a dartboard landing spot.
Analysis Required - Since you already know what you are doing, the best plan starts with a good read of the sand and survey of the green surface conditions. You need a dartboard too, but factor in shot trajectory and club selection/spin control.
Your Bunker Execution
Look at the sand not the ball, don't dig, swing through the sand. Pick one wedge degree i.e. 56 for all sand. KISS principle. Practice for confidence so you can advance to the 2nd level quickly.
Check your set up fundamentals i.e. your alignment and make sure that your ball position is functional relative to your alignment. Most common issue with the open bunker alignment is to have the ball too far forward, causing a big ole' fatty or an upswing missile! This will get you on the green more with closer proximity to the hole.
Make your wedge selection sympatico with the shot you are trying to hit. Amazing how many times really good players will try to force a 60 degree into every scenario.
Practice and let me know if you need help. Free advice is even better when it's coming from a PGA Master Professional and not your buddy in the 19th hole!
